• This dissertation aims to advance our understanding of regional disparities in India. Chapter 2 focuses on the agricultural sector, which is the dominant industry sector in rural areas, asking the question on how future climate change may impact agricultural output. Chapter 3 studies air pollution as an immediate consequence of local proximity in space. As air pollution can be understood as a local negative externality of urbanization, it poses the question of how the spatial shape of a city impacts local air quality. While Chapter 2 and 3 study rural and urban aspects of the Indian economy separately, Chapter 4 emphasizes the role of place-based polices such as Special Economic Zones (SEZ) for economic development. Hence, the last chapter provides insights on how place-based trade liberalization policies impact the spatial distribution of economic activity by enforcing agglomeration economies.
• Diese Dissertation zielt darauf ab, unser Verständnis von regionalen Disparitäten in Indien zu vertiefen. Kapitel 2 befasst sich mit dem Agrarsektor, dem dominierenden Wirtschaftszweig in ländlichen Gebieten, und projiziert die landwirtschaftliche Produktion unter unterschiedlichen Erderwärmungsszenarien. In Kapitel 3 wird Luftverschmutzung als unmittelbare Folge von räumlicher lokaler Nähe im Raum untersucht. Da Luftverschmutzung als lokale negative Externalität von Urbanisierung verstanden werden kann, stellt sich die Frage, inwiefern sich die räumliche Form einer Stadt auf die lokale Luftqualität auswirkt. In Kapitel 4 wird die Rolle von ortsbezogenen Maßnahmen wie Sonderwirtschaftszonen (SWZ) für die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung untersucht. Das letzte Kapitel gibt daher Aufschluss darüber, wie sich eine ortsbezogene Handelsliberalisierungspolitik auf die räumliche Verteilung der Wirtschaft auswirkt, indem sie Agglomerationseffekte kreiert und verstärkt.
