Explicit linear model predictive control by dynamic programming for active sets
- Explicit model predictive control represents an established method to control constrained multivariable systems with fast dynamics. An optimal control problem (OCP) is solved offline as a function of the system state. In general, the calculation of these solutions is computationally demanding and therefore often limited to applications with few states and short prediction horizons. This work presents new approaches to efficiently compute the exact solutions to constrained linear-quadratic OCPs. The focus of the approaches presented is on calculating the solution by iteratively increasing the prediction horizon, which corresponds to the procedure of dynamic programming. Furthermore, the presented approaches are tailored specifically for solving OCPs with symmetries. Analysis of the computational effort shows that the proposed approaches are particularly advantageous for OCPs with long prediction horizons.
