Exploring the role of XR collaboration in the construction industry

  • This research paper examines the potential of Extended Reality (XR) collaboration in the construction industry and the impact of 5G technologies based on applied research projects and experimental analysis of XR applications in construction. First, we investigate related work regarding XR collaboration in construction, leveraging the transition from Computer Supported Collaborative Work (CSCW) to XR. The research projects reveal the benefits and challenges of adopting XR collaboration and Building Information Modeling (BIM) in the industry. Experimental evaluations of XR applications show that XR collaboration can improve communication, coordination, and decision-making among construction professionals. Integrating 5G networks benefits XR collaboration, enabling real-time and remote data exchange. However, there are several barriers to XR adoption, including high costs, technological limitations, and resistance to change among industry professionals. Usability is a crucial factor in determining the success of XR collaboration tools. Future research and development efforts should enhance usability and address the identified challenges to facilitate widespread XR adoption in the construction industry. Overall, this research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on emerging collaboration technologies and provides insights for construction professionals, technology developers, and policymakers to harness the potential of XR collaboration.
