Enhancing communication of building requirements and underlying rules through visualization of their associations

  • Effective communication is a major challenge in the construction industry due to the diverse stakeholders working together on projects. Also, the variation in file formats used for creating building standards complicates the tracking of requirements’ origin. One authority for developing standards is the German Institute for Standardization (DIN). The DIN proposed the Initiative Smart standards to provide their standards in a machine-readable way, utilizing an XML model called Standard Tag Suite (NISO-STS) introduced by the NISO for formulating textual content and metadata of standards. Contrarily, organizations like buildingSmart implement a data format in practice, which utilizes the data schema introduced in DIN EN ISO 23386 for describing and managing properties. Both formats express the same requirements, but understanding their interconnections complicates versioning and increases the workload during adaptions. A visualization tool is introduced, that offers a structured view of the NISO-STS standard document alongside the corresponding requirements formulated based on DIN EN ISO 23386. The visualization should enhance the overall comprehension of requirement origins and improve communication between stakeholders. The paper concludes by discussing the web tools’ advantages, limitations, and possible further developments regarding their use in the construction industry.
