Multinary Co-Cu-based catalysts derived from hydrotalcite-like precursors applied in the hydrogenation of carbon monoxide to higher alcohols
- CoCu-based catalysts are widely applied in higher alcohol synthesis and can been modified to great extent. The presented work includes the variation of the Co/Cu ratio in a broad range, modifications with Fe and Ce, supporting the catalyst on various carbon-based materials and the surface modification via a novel impregnation approach aiming at the selective promotion and poisoning of active sites. All catalysts had been tested for their catalytic activity and characterized in great extent using a variety of suitable methods like XRD, nitrogen physisorption, TG, TPR and XPS. This revealed an optimal Co/Cu ratio of two as the best trade-off between CO conversion and alcohol selectivity. For the modifications with Fe and Ce structure-activity relationships were derived by a combination of test and characterization results. The surface modification performed on tested catalyst material revealed the selective modification of active sites in a second test.
