• This thesis is one of the very first studies to cast a comprehensive, longue-durée overview on urban waste problems in the People’s Republic of China through the historical lens. Integrating Chinese social and environmental history, and based on an extensive historical analysis that draws from a multitude of primary sources such as archival materials, historical newspapers and historical publications, this thesis proves that China’s historical relationship with waste is highly ambivalent. Early on in the twentieth century it already reveals large-scale structural problems with severe consequences for the natural environment, but it also features progressive approaches to waste management, in the context of different notions of a circular economy, which, however, have not been successfully integrated. As this thesis argues, this ambivalence need to be considered when it comes to explaining waste problems in China comprehensively and with an understanding of long-term developments.
• Diese Dissertation nimmt die urbane Abfallproblematik in der Volksrepublik China historisch im Rahmen einer longue-durée-Perspektive in den Blick. Sie integriert chinesische Sozial- und Umweltgeschichte und stützt sich auf die Analyse einer Vielzahl von Primärquellen, darunter archivalisches Material, historische Zeitungen und historische Publikationen. Die Studie kennzeichnet das historische Verhältnis der chinesischen Gesellschaft zum Abfall als ein ambivalentes. Bereits früh im 20. Jahrhundert zeigen sich sowohl tiefgreifende strukturelle Probleme mit ernsthaften Folgen für die natürliche Umwelt als auch progressive Ansätze der Abfallverwertung im Rahmen verschiedener Modelle der Kreislaufwirtschaft, welche allerdings nicht erfolgreich integriert werden konnten. Die Dissertation argumentiert, dass diese Ambivalenz berücksichtigt werden muss, wenn es darum geht, die chinesische Abfallproblematik umfassend und mit einem Verständnis für langfristige Entwicklungsprozesse zu erklären.
