A novel process for the liquid feedstock plasma spray of ceramic coatings with nanostructural features
- This study focuses in the optimization of the liquid feedstock plasma spray process conducted under atmospheric conditions use to deposit multi-lamellar coatings with nanostructural features, serving mainly as thermal barriers or dense electrolytes for SOFC applications. A system was developed to inject the suspensions or solution-precursors containing tiny ceramic particles (<1\(\mu\)m) into the free expanding plasma jets. SEM and image analysis were used to analyze splat-forming particles and sprayed bulk material, which were spatially resolved in the plasma plume while their agglomeration/consolidation was correlated to the standoff distance. Further, a model describing the fragmentation of the liquid feedstock and its evaporation was partially formulated where droplet dimensions and time scales are proven to be in good agreement with the experimental data. Similarly, the study of coating cross-sections served to correlate the microstructural features to the process parameters.
