New insights into the role of the superior colliculus in coordinated gaze-reach movements
- In this thesis we examined the contribution of the Superior Colliculus (SC) to the generation of coordinated gaze-reach movements in primates. To this end, neural activity was recorded in the SC of behaving monkeys during the performance of several cognitive and reflexive tasks. Three major findings are presented in this study. First, a top-down decision mechanism (predictability) was found to modulate the activity of neurons at the rostral pole of the SC. Second, their activity increased during the execution of arm movements, thus providing a neural correlate for the gaze anchoring effect, i.e. the prolongation of fixation during entire reaching movements. Third, our measured neuronal and behavioral data extended the role of the SC in saccade initiation to coordinated gaze-reach movements. Taken together, these results propose the SC as part of the distributed neural system for eye-hand coordination.
