Disentangling factors contributing to human memory for spatial and non-spatial materials
- This project investigated the relationship between objective target identity and subjective perception of memory for two types of stimuli: spatial and non-spatial (scenes and faces). Calibrated morphed stimuli were created for both materials to produce similar shifts in memory performance. Neural correlates were investigated through fMRI and EEG. Results showed that medial temporal lobe (MTL) activity is best explained by a combination of subjective and objective factors. In addition, there is a considerable impact of reaction times (RTs) on memory-related areas. Whole brain analysis revealed an important interplay of perceptual processing areas in memory tasks. ERP results confirmed a memory strength signal over the right frontal areas at 550 - 1500 ms. We could not find the late parietal ERP component described in the literature. These results partially explain inconsistent findings about neurocognitive patterns of episodic memory in current literature.
