Studies of the evolution of visual and visuo-motor structures in vertebrates
- The accessory optic system (AOS) of bony \(\textit {(Carassius auratus)}\) and cartilaginous \(\textit {(Scyliorhinus canicula)}\) fish was investigated. Afferent and efferent projections of the pretectal area (APT) in goldfish and the corpus geniculatum laterale (Cgl) in shark were found to be remarkably similar to the AOS of tetrapods. Direction-selective neurons in both areas shared same properties as direction-selective neurons in the AOS of tetrapods. Therewith the APT in bony and the Cgl in cartilaginous fish are the homolog structures of the AOS of tetrapods. In addition internal reference frames of direction-selective neurons were found to be quite different in bony and cartilaginous fish (Masseck & Hoffmann, 2008). Furthermore the OKR of different gecko species were examined to figure out, if retinal specializations determine the occurrence of monocular horizontal OKR. In conclusion, neither a fovea, nor diurnal or nocturnal lifestyle is correlated with the degree of symmetry (Masseck et al., 2008).
