Placement and distribution of orientation specific lateral inputs onto the dendrites of excitatory cells in the primary visual cortex of the cat
- In order to explore the specific input relationship between the excitatory lateral connections and orientation specificity in the visual cortex of the cat, orientation maps were recorded using optical imaging of intrinsic signals followed by extracellular tracer injections into area 17 and 18. Strongly labelled somata and dendritic fields of pyramidal and spiny stellate cells were selected and reconstructed in 3D. The dendrites were screened for putative contacts established by pyramidal-type axons. Quantitative analysis revealed that the majority of inputs originated from similar orientation sites and did not show an orientation-dependent compartmentalization on distinct dendritic branches. However, we could demonstrate a preferential innervation of \(3^{rd}\) and \(4^{th}\) order dendritic branches of basal and lateral branches of apical dendrites. It is concluded that orientation specificity plays no decisive role for the precise location of the synaptic inputs along the dendritic tree.
