Lagrangian statistics of turbulent flows in fluids and plasmas
- This work investigates the Lagrangian scaling behavior and probability density functions (PDF) of hydrodynamic (HD) and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulent flows. Concerning the PDFs in both systems a transition from Gaussian distributions for large increments to highly intermittent PDFs for small increments is observed. The tails of the magnetic field for small increments are as stretched as the tails of the acceleration PDFs. Considering Lagrangian structure functions reveals that both Navier-Stokes turbulence and MHD turbulence show anomalous scaling behavior. Navier-Stokes turbulence is more intermittent than MHD turbulence. The situation is reversed in the Eulerian framework. This important difference is attributed to the influence of the coherent structures on intermittency considered either in the Eulerian or Lagrangian framework. The case of frozen and decorrelated as well as a novel time increment are analyzed to shed new light on the subtle Lagrangian scaling behavior.
