Effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation on visual evoked potentials, EEG and immediate early gene expression
- Effects of nine different repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) protocols (1, 3 and 10 Hz applied for 1, 5 and 20 min) on visual cortical excitability was investigated by means of VEP and EEG recordings in anaesthetized cats. Our results show that 10 Hz rTMS applied for 1 and 5 min significantly enhanced, while 1 and 3 Hz rTMS applied for 5 and 20 min reduced VEP amplitudes. EEG delta activity was transiently increased after 1 and 3 Hz rTMS applied for 1 or 5 min. To explore the effects of various rTMS on metabolic and neuronal activity, IEG (c-fos, zif268) expression was investigated after 1 Hz, 10 Hz and iTBS protocols. The cortical expression of IEGs was changed depending on rTMS protocol. One and 10 Hz rTMS enhanced c-fos protein expression in all cortical areas tested, while iTBS was effective only in limbic cortices. Zif268 expression was increased in almost all cortical areas after iTBS, while 10 Hz rTMS was effective only in the primary motor and sensory cortices.
