• This thesis is concerned with visual imaginings: the sort of mental states you are in if you imagine a bunch of colourful flowers or a unicorn. The aim of this thesis is to pave the way for a theory of imaginings, which considers them as a sui generis type of mental state. More precisely, I will pursue this aim by clarifying the structure and content of imaginings. A common way to approach visual imaginings is to consider them as similar to perceptual experiences. I will reject this analogy. One main target of my criticism is a wide-spread view on imaginings, which I will call the rich view. The rich view endorses the idea that visual imaginings have a content that consists of several parts, an image and an intellectual element which together determine what the imagining is about. I will suggest and defend an alternative account, the simple view, which conceives of imaginings as sui generis mental states with simple and unified content.
• Der Gegenstand dieser Arbeit sind visuelle Vorstellungen: jene mentalen Zustände, in denen man sich befindet, wenn man sich etwa einen Strauß bunter Blumen oder ein Einhorn vorstellt. Ziel ist es, einen Forschungsansatz für Theorien von Vorstellungen aufzuzeigen, der diese als eigenständige Klasse von mentalen Zuständen auffasst. Dazu werden folgende Fragen erörtert: Was ist die Struktur von visuellen Vorstellungen und wie lässt sich ihr Gehalt beschreiben? Oft werden Vorstellungen in Anlehnung an Wahrnehmungszustände behandelt. Diese Analogie wird zurückgewiesen. Im Fokus der Kritik steht ein Theorieansatz, der den Gehalt von Vorstellungen als segmentiert ansieht. Diese Theorie vertritt die These, dass visuelle Vorstellungen aus einem sensorischen Teil, dem "Bild" bestehen, der durch einen nicht-sensorischen Teil ergänzt wird. Als Gegenentwurf wird in dieser Arbeit eine alternative Sichtweise entwickelt: Vorstellungen haben einen simplen Gehalt, der nicht segmentiert ist.
